A panel of ministers from commerce, health, agriculture, chemicals and petrochemicals, and food processing departments chaired by finance minister (FM) Nirmala Sitharaman will study the proposal of Ministry of Health, Government of India(GoI) to ban the production and import of e-cigarettes, through an ordinance. The health ministry in august 2018, has proposed a nation-wide ban on electronic cigarettes /electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) with a prison sentence up to one year and stiff monetary penalties of ₹1 lakh for first-time offenders & up to three years and Rs 5 lakh for repeat offenders. More than 460 e-cigarette brands with over 7,700 flavours are available in the country as per the Government data.
