Tamil Nadu has become the first state in the country to enact legislation on contract farming with the approval of the Agricultural Produce and Livestock Contract Farming and Services (Promotion and Facilitation) Act. Through this, the law will protect the interests of farmers in the event of market price fluctuations. Under this, under the pre-harvest agreement between the buyers and the farmers, the farmers will be paid a pre-determined price and such agreements will have to be registered with the designated officials of the Department of Agricultural Marketing and Agribusiness. Any produce restricted by the Central or State Government or the Indian Council of Agricultural Research will not be covered under contract farming.
