In the American War of Independence a petty officer and a part of soldiers were told a raise a heavy log. There were only a few men to do the work. The officer did nothing. He stood there and shouted loudly giving orders.
At that time a stranger, not in uniform came there on a horse. ‘Hello’ he said to the officer, ‘why don’t you help them to lift that log?”
‘Don’t you know that I am an officer?’
“Are you?” said the stranger.
He then got down and joined the men. He worked till sweat flowed down the face. When the log had been raised and put into place, he turned to the officer and made him a low bow. “Good day Mr. officer,” he said, “next time if you have too few men for this kind of work, send for me and I shall be happy to help you again.”
